FAQ
Q: When the green light is on, should I turn it off to save power and avoid overcharging the battery?
A: No!
There are several reasons for this. At the end of the charging cycle, when the green ready indicator is on, the charger trickles charge the battery in a constant voltage float/standby mode, with a rated voltage of 2.3 volts per cell. This charging method is the same as the charging method for batteries in alarm panels or emergency lighting waiting machine applications, that is, charging the battery 24 hours a day. At this voltage, the battery will not gas, so the loss of electrolyte is minimal. The charging current will drop exponentially to a very low level, enough to keep the battery fully charged and compensate for any self-discharge. Over time, this low charge rate will tend to balance the charge imbalance between the batteries, thereby extending the service life of the battery.
If the charger is turned on, the risk of battery damage due to solution is avoided. Very little energy is consumed in standby mode, and a medium-sized charger is typically around 10 watts, so consuming one unit (1 kWh) of power every 100 hours costs about 1.5 pence per day. The only exception to this advice is when the battery manufacturer explicitly states that the battery is not suitable for continuous standby.
